According to ScreenRant, a new series based on the post apocalyptic video game Twisted Metal is coming to Peacock. But contrary to other apocalyptic/zombie series like The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, Twisted Metal will tell its storyline through a comedic or satirical standpoint giving a fresh take on the macabre genre.
The teaser trailer for Twisted Metal was released today on April 28, and showcases Anthony Mackie (Captain America: New World Order, Black Mirror, 8 Mile) as the leading protagonist. The series will reign true to the original games following John Doe, a milkman suffering from amnesia trying to navigate the chaotic ins and outs of a scorched earth throughout the series.
The teaser opens on a driving sequence not too dissimilar to a Mad Max atmosphere, introducing Mackie as John Doe with a unique sense of galley humor as he turns on his driving tune “Steal My Sunshine” as he cruises into the distance. Afterwards viewers recognize a crashed ice cream truck next to a vandalized Las Vegas sign reading “Lost Vegas” and a familiar ravenous clown chowing down inside the truck, teasing the antagonist appearance of the killer clown Sweet Tooth. Creators of the Twisted Metal series are seemingly aware of the massive influx of video games transitioning into other forms of media. The teaser steers into some basic tropes from other well-known horror productions. For instance, the idea of monsters in Las Vegas has been done many times in both mediums with projects like Army of the Dead and Fallout: New Vegas.
Although Twisted Metal is following a current television fad of turning video games into films or television, especially the zombie apocalypse angle, the show will seemingly bring a breath of fresh air to the genre focusing on slapstick jokes and dark humor to progress the storyline along with the obvious zombie killing montages. With Mackie’s fame increasing exponentially over the past couple of years, taking up the mantle of Captain America, fans are hopeful for the new series, which is on track to become a smash hit for Peacock releasing on July 27.
