The king of the monsters is returning to Netflix once again for an all-new anime series. Entitled Godzilla: Singular Point, the series will follow an all-new storyline and cast of characters, Variety reported today.
The new series is being developed by several veterans of the anime and manga industries. Atsushi Takahashi (Spirited Away, Sword Art Online) will direct the series while Kan Sawada (Doraemon) will compose the music. Kazue Kato (creator of Blue Exorcist) will serve as lead character designer. Finally, Eiji Yamamori (animator for Studo Ghibli classics such as Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Whisper of the Heart) will serve as head animator for the series. A preview image featuring Kato’s designs for the main cast of characters and Yamamori’s new redesign for Godzilla himself was uploaded to Netflix’s Twitter.

In addition, Japanese sci-fi author Toh Enjoe (guest writer Space Dandy) will act as head writer for the series. This will be his first time leading an anime series. Netflix will partner with anime studios Bones (behind series such as My Hero Academia and Fullmetal Alchemist) and Orange (behind Beastars) to produce a hybrid of CGI and hand-drawn animation for the series.
Godzilla has already made his debut on Netflix in a separate trilogy of anime films. The films, titled Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (which premiered in 2017), Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, and Godzilla: The Planet Eater (both debuted in 2018), are in a separate continuity from this upcoming series. Godzilla: Singular Point will premiere in 2021.
