According to ScreenRant, a new revival of the classic horror franchise Friday the 13th entitled Crystal Lake is currently in production and will follow the events of the camp, counselors, and unfortunate patrons before that bloody Friday night. The franscise, born over 40 years ago, has seen Jason Vorehees through several sequels, video games, reboots, and even crossovers, but this is the first time the hockey masked slasher will be on television programming.
A recent tweet regarding the upcoming project was posted on social media on March 13 (fitting date, although it was Tuesday instead of a Friday) giving a behind-the-scenes look at the creative writing and production team as well as actors old and new. The tweet was posted by Tananarive Due (Miles Underwater, Horror Noire, Danger Word) and credits Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, Star Trek: Discovery) as the lead creator of the first season as demonstrated in the Twitter post below.
Also in the Twitter photo is original 80’s actress Adrienne King (Saturday Night Fever, The Butterfly Room, Jason Rising) wearing the green jacket on the left-hand side. King’s original role in the 1980 film was Alice Hardy, the final girl of the camp not yet slaughtered by Jason’s machete. She survives and makes it into the first sequel in 1981 where she reprised her original role. More than four decades later, the actress is back on the scene but her new role has not been released to the public yet. Speculations suggest she could play a senior counselor or possibly a slasher expert, similar to Jamie Lee Curits (Knives Out, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Freaky Friday) reprising her role in 2018’s slasher franchise sequel, Halloween.
The series will heavily involve the backstory of Jason, played by Ari Lehman (Easter Holocaust, Clown Motel, Friday the 13th), and his mother Pamela Vorehees, originally played by Betsy Palmer (Ive Got A Secret, The Tin Star Friday the 13th), before the duo snapped and slaughtered New Jersey campers. The murder spree would eventually grow and evolve taking Jason around the country as well as alternate realities to quench their bloodlust.
The series is being created with the help of A24, a modern production company who has produced modern-day horror hits and award-winning thrillers either psychological or fantasy. They are most notably known for Midsommar, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and countless other well-known projects.
The Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, currently does not have a set release date but will be exclusively streamable on Peacock.
