Netflix has officially revealed The Roman as the title for its upcoming Las Vegas-set drama series starring Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina, Frankenstein). According to Deadline, along with the title announcement, Netflix also confirmed that Betty Gilpin (The Hunt, GLOW), Alec Baldwin (The Departed, Saturday Night Live), and David Costabile (Lincoln, Billions) have joined the cast as series regulars. The hour-long drama comes from Billions creators Brian Koppelman (Runaway Jury, Runner Runner) and David Levien (Runaway Jury, Rounders), who also serve as showrunners and executive producers on the series.
Gilpin will portray Marla Blake, the wife of Isaac’s Bobby Red, a highly connected lawyer who knows how to navigate the darker side of Las Vegas just as well as her husband. Baldwin has been cast as Paul “Primo” Clark, a longtime chairman of the organization who acts as a mentor and surrogate father figure to Bobby. Costabile will play Bill Saverick, the operator of a rival casino who finds himself caught between loyalty and the city’s increasingly aggressive business dealings.
Set in present-day Las Vegas, The Roman follows Robert “Bobby Red” Redman, played by Isaac, who serves as president of the hottest hotel casino in the city. As competition intensifies, Bobby is forced to make increasingly risky decisions in order to protect his position and expand his influence in the dangerous casino industry.
Koppelman and Levien executive produce the series alongside Isaac, Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, GoodFellas), Sikelia Productions, Julie Yorn (Hell or High Water, Formula 51), Rick Yorn (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Wolf of Wall Street), Paul Schiff (Awake, Fractured), and Beth Schacter (The Morning Show, Billions). J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, Margin Call) is also attached to executive produce and direct the first two episodes of the series, with Kerry Orent (No Hard Feelings, Michael Clayton) serving as co-executive producer.
Gilpin is best known for starring in GLOW and has recently appeared in projects including American Primeval, Three Women, and Mrs. Davis. Baldwin appeared in films such as Glengarry Glen Ross and The Departed, while Costabile is known for his work on Billions and Breaking Bad. Netflix has not yet announced a release date for The Roman.
