The anticipated final season of Netflix’s historical drama series, The Last Kingdom, finally has a release date. Series star Alexander Dreymon (Blood Ransom, Heartlock) revealed on his Instagram profile that the fifth season will debut on Wednesday, March 9. Dreymon portrays Uhtred, a Saxon warrior caught between two worlds as he fights to avenge a family and land viciously stolen from him. As a child, his family was slaughtered, leaving him a prisoner of war. Fortunately, a benevolent Danish man took Uhtred in and raised him as his own. However, years later, another tragedy silenced his surrogate family and father figure, placing adult Uhtred on a path of revenge. The series is based on The Saxon Stories (Sword Song, War Lord) novels by author Bernard Cromwell. Dreymon spoke last year with Deadline regarding his time as the character.
“It’s been such a privilege to tell Uhtred’s story for five seasons,” Dreymon said via Deadline. “I’m so grateful to our fans. They have been immensely loyal to The Last Kingdom and thanks to their support, the team is getting together for another round,” Dreymon stated according to Deadline.
While the fifth season will end the show, Netflix is planning final film that will stream after this season. The film began production ahead of season five.
Along with Dreymon, the series stars Thea Sofie Loch Naess (Delete Me, One Night in Oslo) as Thea; Emily Cox (The Jerks, The Fatherless) as Brida; Mark Rowley (Macbeth, Lift Share) as Finan; Arnas Fedaravicus (Access All Areas, Revolution Theory) as Sihtric; and Julia Bache-Wiig (Two Lives, Turn Me On, Dammit) as Thyra.
Debuting in 2015, the series was originally a BBC 2 production and remained there for two seasons. Netflix, which co-produced the show, purchased it outright for the remaining three seasons.
