Michael Douglas stars as Sandy Kominsky, an acting coach who once had successful Hollywood career in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method. Production soon began once the Golden Globe-winning show received a thumbs up for a second season renewal in January. The new season will consist of eight episodes – the same as the first.
Alan Arkin stars alongside Douglas as Norman Newlander, a friend and agent to Sandy.
“The first season was a walk through the darkness in Norman’s loss of his wife and his health issues,” series creator and producer Chuck Lorre said. “While health issues will remain part of the series, things change markedly for Norman and Sandy…it’s unexpected. I wanted to write how the light can flicker in the dark for people…all for the better.”
The show marks Douglas’s return to TV in a lead role since over 40 years ago when he starred in The Streets of San Francisco. It didn’t take much to convince Douglas to get involved with the project.
“When I read the first script, when Chuck sent it to me, I said ‘this is funny,’ I can relate,” Douglas said. “It belittles most of the stuff that I get to see in feature films.”
As Norman struggles to cope with his loss in the first season, Lorre assures the character will eventually find some hope.
“There was a lot of loss and melancholy in the first eight episodes, and it just felt right to take these characters in a different direction,” Lorre explained.
For Chuck Lorre, finding a rhythm with his new comedy show without a live audience was something different, but not impossible.
“This was an opportunity to just write and trust it, which was difficult,” he said. “That was a big leap for me.”
The second season has snagged recurring guest stars Jane Seymour, Jacqueline Bisset, and Paul Reiser.
There is no release date for season two as of yet.
