The recently released teaser trailer for Netflix‘s upcoming series The Umbrella Academy, gives a first look for fans at the superheroes in action. The six surviving super-powered children showcase some of their gifted abilities while investigating the recent death of their father figure.
The live-action adaptation, is based on the same Dark Horse Comic series and will premiere on the streaming service, February 15 2019. Earlier in October, Netflix also released a collection of character poster’s for the upcoming show, showcasing most of the cast.
Although originally the graphic novel was written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, the series’ live action work will star Tom Hopper (Black Sails), Emmy Raver-Lampman (A Million Little Things), Ellen Page (Juno), Robert Sheehan (Misfits), David Castañeda (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn), Cameron Britton (Mindhunter), and infamous R&B crooner Mary J. Blige.
Universal Cable Productions will produce, with showrunner Steve Blackman serving as executive producer alongside Jeff King, Keith Goldberg and Mike Richardson. Collaborators Way and Bá will also co-produce the show.
Netflix’s released synopsis details that on the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world.
But not everything goes according to plan. In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death just as a looming apocalypse approaches.
