The popular Netflix series, Squid Game will be making its return this year. The show focuses on a group of people dealing with financial hardships who participated in a secret contest to compete in children’s games to win which eventually turns deadly. The Korean drama show was confirmed by Netflix of returning in 2024.
According to Deadline, many of Netflix’s shows will debut their second season such as Empress and The Diplomat alongside Squid Games with Bridgerton returning for its third season.
Netflix says in it’s investor letter “Looking ahead, despite last year’s strikes pushing back the launch of some titles, we have a big, bold slate for 2024″.
On September 17, 2021, Squid Game had its Netflix debut and quickly gained international attention. The series became the first on Netflix to surpass 100 million members at launch, clocking over 1.65 billion viewing hours in just 28 days and reaching 111 million accounts. It continues to be the most viewed Netflix series ever.
Lee Byung-hun (Concrete Utopia, Mr. Sunshine) will reprise his role as Front Man in Season Two, while Wi Ha-jun(The Chase, Coin Locker Girl) will resume the role of police detective Jun-ho. Gong Yoo (Silenced, The Silent Sea) is also scheduled to return.
Along with Jo Yu-ri (Idol School, Mimicus), Lee David(Split, The Hypnosis), Choi Seung-hyun(Commitment, Tazza: The Hidden Card), Won Ji-an(Heartbeat, If You Wish Upon Me), Park Gyu-young(A Good Day To Be A Dog, Celebrity), Roh, Jae-won(Uncle Sam-sik, Ms.Apocalypse), and Kang Ae-sim(Bad and Crazy, Be Melodramatic), the new cast also features Yang Dong-geun(Ruler Of Your World, Night Of The Undead), Kang Ha-Neul(When The Cameilla Blooms,The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure), Yim Si-wan(The Moon Embraces The Sun, Boyhood), Park Sung-hoon (The Kidnapping Day, Psychopath Diary).
According to Deadline, the second season of the show will resume production this year, with Hwang Dong-hyuk serving as executive producer and director once again. In May, The Diplomat, starring Keri Russell, received a second season renewal.
Debora Cahn(Paterno) is the creator of the political drama; she co-executive produces it with Janice Wiliams(Lola Versus, The Final Girls), Keri Russell(Cocaine Bear, August Rush), and Alex Graves(The Crude Oasis, Day One). As the new American ambassador to the United Kingdom, it follows Russell’s character Kate Wyler. In addition to attempting to maintain her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler played by Rufus Sewell (The Holiday, A Knight’s Tale), she must manage foreign crises, build strategic alliances in London, and get used to her newfound prominence.
Starring with them are David Gyasi(Carnival Row, Hell On The Boarder), Ali Ahn(Raising Dion, The Girl In The Book), Rory Kinnear(Bank Of Dave, Men), and Ato Essandoh(Reptile, The Code).
The now “ultra-sexy” Bridgerton will return in two parts on June 13 and May 16, according to a previous reveal from Netflix. The drama, spanning eight episodes, is based on Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland.
Last but not least, a German drama series called The Empress debuted in September 2022. Starring with Johannes Nussbaum (Hannes,Prélude), Devrim Lingnau(Carmilla, Borga)as the titular Austrian Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, Almila Bagriacik(Just A Woman, Sisters Apart) and Philip Froissant(Black Island, One Trillion Dollars).
