Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Debuts to Huge Critical Success

The straw hat pirates are setting sail! Netflix has released its live-action adaptation of One Piece. The new series will be covering the anime’s East Blue saga, and it is quite the undertaking. One Piece is a very beloved anime, and fans are quite particular about the portrayal of their favorite animated pirates. But reviews are pouring in, and the show is a hit.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, One Piece currently has an 81% rating by critics and whopping 94% rating by audiences. The critic’s consensus reads “One Piece captures the essence of its beloved source material with a charmingly big-hearted adaptation that should entertain longtime fans as well as patient newcomers.”

Live-action remakes of anime have been very popular throughout Hollywood lately. Between Avatar: The Last Airbender, Death Note, and Cowboy Bebop, there have been many adaptations brought to the screen. Most of them were met with plenty of negative reviews from the fans, so understandably, One Piece also created anxiety among loyal audiences as they were nervous to see if their favorite series was going to flop as well. But after many years of waiting, fret no more! Fans and critics alike are pouring in their positive reviews for the live-action adventure.

“Just like superhero films before them, live-action anime has had a rough go in Hollywood, but every streak must end. Netflix’s One Piece marks a definite turn in that sour reputation,” comicbook.com’s review of the series reads. “The adaptation is worthy of telling the Pirate King’s tale.”

One Piece is an ambitious undertaking to portray into a live-action series. The original anime is over 1,000 episodes long and surrounds Monkey D. Luffy, a young, cartoonish pirate on a mission with his pirate crew to become the next pirate king by finding the treasure known as “One Piece”. The Netflix series stars Iñaki Godoy (The Imperfects) as Luffy, Emily Rudd (Fear Street) as Nami, Mackenyu (Knights of the Zodiac) as Zoro, Jacob Romero (Greenleaf) as Usopp, and Taz Skylar (Boiling Point) as Sanji. The One Piece live-action series is now streaming on Netflix, and if you want to catch up on the original anime, the series is still being created and released on a weekly basis.
