The Netflix action-comedy series Obliterated will not be seeing second season. This news came out of left field as the series was seen on Netflix’s Top 10 in the No.1 slot for the English-language series section during its second week on the streamer and was on the list for six weeks after its release last year on November 30, according to Deadline—Netflix bases what to keep and chop depending on cost vs. analyzing views.
Obliterated comes from the creators of Cobra Kai, Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine, Mardi Gras: Spring Break), Hayden Schlossberg (A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, American Reunion) and Jon Hurwitz (Blockers, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle).
As per Deadline, the series follows a prominent Special Forces group caught up in a life-threatening situation in Las Vegas. The team stumbles upon a bomb that was previously deactivated by them, only to realize that it was fake after a night of drugs, alcohol and sex. The (now) intoxicated group must fight through their drunken stupor to get past their issues and find the correct bomb to stop the end of the world.
Among the stars on the show were Amalia Yoo (Grand Amy, No Hard Feelings), Thomas Howell (The Outsiders, The Hitcher), Terrence Terrell (Giants, Criminal Minds), Paola Lázaro (The Walking Dead, Lethal Weapon), Nick Zano (The Final Destination, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), Alyson Gorske (The Puppetman, Shrinking), Eugene Kim (The Lincoln Lawyer, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Shelley Hennig (Unfriended, Ouija). Obliterated was produced by Sony Pictures Television, with Heald, Schlossberg and Hurwitz serving as executive producers along with Dina Hillier (Cobra Kai, Plan B).
The series was born from an original concept by Heald, Schlossberg and Hurwitz with their company Counterbalance Entertainment. The trio has worked on raunchy R-rated comedies like the Hot Tub Time Machine, American Reunion, Blockers and Harold & Kumar franchises.
Deadline notes that Obliterated was supposed to simulate the likes of an R-rated comedy-action feature film spanning episodes with a finite beginning, middle and end.
Due to their desire to take Obliterated along the same path as The Hangover Saga and Die Hard, the trio hopes to revisit the idea in some way in the future with the same cast. Nevertheless, Heald, Schlossberg and Hurwitz remain connected to Netflix as Cobra Kai is in production for its last and final season six. Allegedly, the trio has even teased some potential spinoffs for the series, as per Deadline.
