In its recent Geeked Week, Netflix released a new peak at the Tomb Raider series, according to ComicBook. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft will take audiences on a new adventure not seen in the original games, and will even fill in important parts of Crofts’s backstory.
Releasing this October, the famed archeologist will take on high-stakes adventure and undertake a brand new mission. This series is being brought to life by Powerhouse Animation Studios and Crystal Dynamics which have given justice to the swift action of the games that fans have come to know and love. Hayley Attwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) will be the voice of Lara Croft, showing off her voice-acting prowess in the new role.
Many fans were wondering which game story the series would be adapting. The answer, was a new story giving a leak into Croft before the games. According to Comicbook, Crystal Dynamis worked exclusively with series showrunner, Tasha Huo (Red Sonja), and her team to construct a narrative that coincides with video game canon. The story follows the events of the most recent game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, released in 2018. After the series, Lara’s timeline will align with the original Tomb Raider games, leaving fans some nice nodes to the 20-year lore.
In recent years, the Tomb Raider franchise has been busy. In 2023, a new game was released titled Tomb Raider Reloaded and the long-awaited remaster of the original game was a hit amongst fans. As for the Tomb Raiders screen appearances, not many expected to see another big or silver screen adaption anytime soon. With two adaptions already existing, the 2018 film with Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and the iconic Angelina Jolie (Mr and Mrs Smith) flick, the anime adaption is sure to shake things up.
