Netflix’s Geeked Week Reveals A Return To ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Universe

Netflix’s Geeked Week 2024 has kicked off with many exciting upcoming television announcements, but one unexpected reveal was the returned collaboration between Netflix and studio CD Projekt Red. Previously in 2022, Netflix, CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger produced an anime series based on CD Projekt Red’s video game IP, Cyberpunk 2077, debuting a television spinoff with the title Cyberpunk: Edgerunners via Comicbook.com. Netflix released a trailer announcing a new project based in the cyberpunk world. View the teaser below.

For context, the animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows young adult David Martinez as he tries to make a name for himself in the dystopia which is Night City, a metropolis filled with crime, cyborgs and tech upgrades. Spoilers Ahead! After David loses his mom in the crossfire of some gruesome gang activity, he seeks out a posse of his own. Life in Night City doesn’t stop for grief, so David is swept up in the dynamics of new-found independence, posse relationships and glamor of tech upgrades. However, David’s new fast life has its consequences.

The finale episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners left off on a note that seemed to leave little space for a sequel series, however, Netflix’s teaser has opened the possibility for one. The 20 second trailer leaves a lot to be desired, opening with a prolonged cyberpunk-esque glitch of the Netflix logo. The rest of the trailer flashes a few words: “Return. To Night City. Cyberpunk.” The caption under the video reads, “Netflix Animation 🤝 CDPR ❤️ Cyberpunk #GeekedWeek” and “Return to Night City. More info coming soon.”

While Netflix has yet to confirm additional information regarding this teaser, the teaser itself assures fans that another story in the Cyberpunk2077 Night City world is on its way. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was not a direct sequel to its video game predecessor Cyberpunk: 2077 in terms of story, so Netflix may choose to develop another independent miniseries based in the games’ universe.

While information on the new series is limited, a future in Night City is on the horizon.
