Netflix’s prequel series to 1982’s The Dark Crystal, has officially been confirmed to be premiering on Friday, Aug. 30th. Titled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, the ten episode mini-series will take place several years before the original, as Thra begins to die despite The Crystal of Truth being at its center.
The series’ official logline reads: “when three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.”
VP of Netflix’s Original Content, Cindy Holland, previously commented on the work’s revival mentioning that the new series “will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis’ vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects. I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.”
Henson’s original concept was set in a world called Mithra, where a malevolent race called the Reptus gained power after a mutiny against the Eunaze, led by Malcolm the Wise. The last survivor of the Eunaze was Malcolm’s son Brian, who was adopted by the Bada, Mithra’s mystical wizards. But after collaborating with screenwriter David Odell, the story evolved into the final film, where the Gelfing Jen embarks on a quest to restore balance to his alien world by returning the lost shard of the dark crystal.
Age of Resistance‘s heroes are the three Gelfling: Rian (Taron Egerton), Vrea (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel). Other voice actors include: Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham-Carter, Natalie Dormer, Mark Hamill, Theo James, Toby Jones, Keegan-Michael Key, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander.
