The end of 2018 seems to have been tied up neatly, at least for Netflix as they officially released both the release date and the first trailer for the long-anticipated Black Mirror TV-to-Film adaptation titled Bandersnatch. The original Netflix series, created by Charlie Booker, was a breakout hit. Matching allegorical sci-fi storytelling that echoed the voice of Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone, the show became an overnight success almost in which its solid production design and piercingly riveting writing made it a must-watch.
The show has been renewed already for a season 5, but the rumored film was first leaked earlier this month when Netflix tweeted and then quickly deleted a post about December programming dates. Though the show itself has had feature film episodes in that of length, with Hated in the Nation amalgamating an 89-minute runtime, Bandersnatch will be the first stand-alone movie. Set in the 1980s, the film will follow Stefan (Fionn Whitehead), a young programmer who has hopes of creating a computer game inspired an adventure novel given to him at a young age.
Will Poulter, Alice Lowe, and Craig Parkinson will round out the cast of the film, which will be helmed by returning Black Mirror director David Slade. The film will be releasing very shortly on Dec. 28 in what will be a slice of the pie for what is to be a long-sit for fans of Black Mirror, as the 5th season has yet to have been rewarded an official release date. Though its fair to presume a 2019 stamp, Black Mirror producers Annabel Jones and creator Charlie Booker have proven to be unafraid of not sticking to a yearly schedule and taking their time when making their story. Nevertheless, Bandersnatch is still one helluva Christmas gift to receive as we continue to wait for that season 5.
