Actors have been revealed for Netflix’s upcoming show, Criminal. Criminal is an experimental show that takes place in numerous countries. The places you can expect to see are the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Germany. Three episodes will be based in each country for a total of twelve episodes. The episodes will be in the native language of the country the episode is based in. Furthermore, the episodes are written and directed by talent from the countries represented.
All of the episodes were filmed in Netflix’s production hub in Madrid, Spain. Episodes will be approximately forty-five minutes in length. The show is confined to the interrogation room where suspects, played by a series of guest stars, are interviewed by the authorities, who will appear in multiple episodes. Netflix has offered little information for the show, but they have teased, “This stripped down, cat-and-mouse drama focuses on the intense mental conflict between detectives and suspects.”
Netflix released a video on June 17, 2019 revealing twelve of the cast members. The two most familiar faces for American audiences are likely David Tennant and Hayley Atwell.
David Tennant has worked in numerous film and television projects over the years. He is most well known for his role as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who. More recently he played Crowley in Amazon Prime Video’s Good Omens. Criminals will not be Tennant’s first crime drama. Tennant starred in the British crime drama Broadchurch. Broadchurch followed the investigation of a young boy’s murder in a small town, in which Tennant played a detective.
Hayley Atwell will also appear in Criminals. The trailer suggests she will be one of the suspects interrogated by the detectives. Atwell is mostly known for her role as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Marvel TV show, Agent Carter.
In addition to Tennant and Atwell, the U.K. cast will consist of Katharine Kelly (Coronation Street) and Nicholas Pinnock (Captain America: The First Avenger) as series regulars, and Youssef Kerkour (Dracula) and Clare-Hope Ashitey (Doctor Foster) as guest stars. These episodes will be helmed by the showrunners George Kay (Killing Eve) and Jim Field Smith (The Wrong Mans).
Further casting announcements include Nathalie Baye and Jérémie Renier in the French episodes and Peter Kurth and Christian Berkel in the German episodes. The Spanish regulars include Jorge Bosch, José Ángel Egido and Nuria Mencía with Carmen Machi and Inma Cuesta guest starring.
Criminal is expected to premiere on Netflix this Fall, but an official date has not been announced yet. Criminal is produced by Idiotlamp.
