Netflix To Adapt New ‘One Piece’ Anime Called ‘The One Piece’

Ready to get your anime on?! Netflix has just announced another One Piece project. According to TV Line, the mega-hit manga is being taken on as an all-new anime show entitled The One Piece

The production team for One Piece released the news in a statement that this series will be different from the over 25-year-old running anime series. The series “aims to provide viewers with a fresh yet familiar experience, utilizing cutting-edge visual technology to reimagine Luffy’s adventures through the beloved East Blue saga,” stated the production committee

Since being written by Eiichiro Oda (Jango’s Dance Carnival, Dream Soccer King!), One Piece has reportedly sold over 510 million comics worldwide and has been published weekly since 1997 in Japan.

One Piece chronicles Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with special rubbery powers. He and his gang, called the Straw Hat Pirates, all band together to obtain the “One Piece” treasure, which would, in turn, make Luffy the King of the Pirates.

The live-action adaptation of the series was released on Netflix on Aug.31, and a second season was greenlit in September and stars Iñaki Godoy (MexZombies, The Imperfects). It also held the No.1 spot on Nielsen’s U.S. of streaming originals the week of Aug.28, garnering 1.3 billion watching minutes for all eight episodes. The series even held the No.19 slot on TV Line’s year-end list for the best on TV this year.

Other actors on the show include Mackenyu (Knights of the Zodiac, Over Drive) as the character Roronoa Zoro, Taz Skylar (Boiling Point, Gassed Up) as Sanji and actress Emily Rudd (Hunters, Fear Street: Part One: 1994) as Nami.

The network is adapting another Oda manga, entitled Monsters 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation, which will debut next month. According to the description of the show, it features “Ryuma, a samurai entangled in a world disrupted by an ominous force — a dragon capable of unleashing catastrophic destruction upon the land.”
