Netflix Series My Life With The Walter Boys Renewed For Season Two As Showrunner Melanie Halsell And Lead Nikki Rodriguez Speak In Exclusive Interview With Deadline

Netflix has announced a Season One renewal for its hit series ‘My Life With The Walter Boys’, Deadline reports. The show has reached high popularity among the platform’s viewers, after just over 10 days on the streamer. In its first week on Netflix, the first season reached 12M views and took the number one spot on the top 10 shows that same weekend.

Season One of the popular series is based on the book of the same name written by Ali Novak (Paper Hearts, The Heartbreakers). The story follows Manhattan girl Jackie Howard, played by Nikki Rodriguez (On My Block, Back to Lyla), who loses her family in tragic accident. Jackie leaves behind her already-planned life in New York to move to rural Colorado to live with the Walter family, who were her mother’s best friends. The Walters welcome her with open arms, but she faces adversities as a complicated love triangle arises between the two brothers, Cole Walter, played by Noah LaLonde (Criminal Minds, Dear Camp ’86), and Alex Walter, played by Ashby Gentry (Are You Afraid Of The Dark?).

The events at the end of the first season are shown differently from the original novel, as the last episode leaves viewers with an open cliffhanger which hints at a season two renewal, now given to the fans. Rodriguez, according to Deadline, has one idea for her character, explaining that she’d like to see a deeper storyline between characters Danny Walter (played by Connor Stanhope), who will be returning from a summer studying at Juilliard, and Erin (played by Alisha Newton), along with their slowburn romance.

Season two poses a big commitment in Melanie Halsall’s hands, who is the executive producer and showrunner of the series, since she will have to continue the storyline beyond the actual book’s ending.

According to Deadline’s special interview with Halsall, the showrunner stated that she was thinking about the possibility of multiple storylines for more seasons already even before she pitched the show to Netflix. “When you’re making television series that you want to be returning, you have to make changes from a novel. I wanted to surprise the audience. I wanted to give the audience something a little bit different than they were expecting from the book. I wanted to leave it open-ended what Jackie was going to do and what boy she was gonna end up with,” Halsall said, via Deadline. “I’ve often said that maybe Jackie won’t end up with a boy but she’ll end up on her own. Maybe that’s still the case. It was a deliberate decision to make that change, and I think it was organic to the story.”

The show features as main stars: Sarah Rafferty (Suits, The Devil Wears Prada) as Katherine Walter, Corey Fogelmanis (Girl Meets World, Criminal Minds) as Nathan Walter, Connor Stanhope (Garage Sale Mysteries) as Danny Walter, Marc Blucas (A Christmas Present, Miss Christmas) as George Walter, and Johnny Link (Dear Edward) as Will Walter. Guest-starring roles include Dean Petriw (Home Before Dark, Sonic The Hedgehog) as Jordan Walter, Isaac Arellanes (Ghostwriter, Blue Miracle) and Myles Perez (The Curse Of Bridge Hollow, Nicky,Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) as the adopted Walter twins, Isaac and Lee Garcia.

Season One of My Life With The Walter Boys is currently available on Netflix for streaming.
