This morning Netflix released seven character posters teasing the new heroes that will be featured in season three of The Umbrella Academy. The show is based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way (Doom Patrol, Lucifer) and follows the exploits of former child superheroes as they try to save the world and survive adulthood.
Season two of the show ended after the original seven (one being a ghost) return after a lengthy time travel adventure to their own time to find that they have drastically altered their present. The seven heroes were originally apart of a team known as the Umbrella Academy lead by their deceased adopted father, but upon returning they find their father alive and watching over a completely different team of seven heroes, the Sparrow Academy.
The Sparrows are relatively new characters to Way’s overarching story. In the comics, the team made their first appearance almost three years ago in June of 2019. Not much is known about them, only that they gained their powers the same way as the Umbrella Academy members and that they are considered family in the comics.
Playing the members of the Sparrow Academy are Justin Cornwell (Training Day, The Inbetween), Justin H. Min (After Yang, Dating After College) who originally was Ben the ghost character for the Umbrella Academy, Britine Oldford (Free Guy, Hunters), Jake Epstein (Degrassi, Mistletoe and Menorahs), Genesis Rodriguez (Tusk, Hours) and Cazzie David (Eighty-Sixed, Half-Empty). The missing seventh character from this list is actually a CGI sentient cube that is reported to cause ‘Existential Dread‘ in people.
From the posters, fans will be quick to notice the extreme scarring this new team has around their faces. This apparent scarring leads fans to speculate just how hardcore and dangerous these new ‘heroes’ are and just how much of a threat to the original characters they will be.
An exact release date for the third season has not been released yet, but Netflix did confirm a 2022 release.
