Netflix has announced that seven classic shows will be available on the streamer between August 1 and October 15 according to Variety. The shows include Moesha on August 1, The Game on August 15, Sister Sister on September 1, Girlfriends on September 11, The Parkers on October 1, Half & Half on October 15, and One on One also on October 15. Netflix made the announcement on Wednesday via Twitter.
The 1996 sitcom Moesha, starring the singer/songwriter Brandy Norwood (Cinderella) as Moesha Mitchell, focuses on a teenager struggling to juggle school, her social life, and getting to know her new step-mom. The series ran for 6 seasons and starred Sheryl Lee Ralph (Instant Mom), Lamont Bentley (The Parkers, Tales from the Hood), Countess Vaughn (The Parkers, Hollywood Divas), and William Allen Young (Code Black, District 9) alongside Norwood.
The Game, which initially aired in 2006, ran for 9 seasons and followed the lives of wives and girlfriends of pro football players as they attempt to fight for the best deals, agents, and endorsements for their significant others. The show starred Hosea Chanchez (Fanatic, Down for Whatever), Tia Mowry (Tia & Tamera, Sister, Sister), Pooch Hall (Ray Donovan, Jumping the Broom), Brittany Daniel (Joe Dirt, White Chicks), Coby Bell (Burn Notice, The Gifted), and Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Steve Harvey Show, Two Can Play At That Game).
The 1994 sitcom Sister, Sister follows two twins named Tia and Tamera who were separated at birth, each being adopted by a different parent. After introducing their families, they move in together despite the obvious differences in personality and hobbies. The series stars Tia Mowry (The Game, Tia & Tamera), Tamera Mowry-Housley (The Real, Tia & Tamera), Jackée Harry (227, The Royal Family), Tim Reid (Frank’s Place, Simon & Simon), Marques Houston (Somebody Help Me, You Got Served), and RonReaco Lee (Survivor’s Remorse, Coffee & Kareem). It will be released to Netflix at the beginning of September.
The 2000 sitcom Girlfriends focuses on a group of women who support each other through love and loss. It ran for 8 seasons and stars Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish, mixed-ish), Jill Marie Jones (Monogamy, The Longshots), Persia White (The Vampire Diaries, Revelation), and Golden Brooks (Hollywood Divas, Beauty Shop). It will be released to Netflix on September 11.
In the 1999 sitcom The Parkers, Kim, played by Countess Vaughn (Hollywood Divas, Moesha), must deal with the tribulations of knowing that her mother has decided to go back to school and attend the same college that she does. The show stars Jenna von Oÿ (Blossom, A Goofy Movie), Dorien Wilson (In the Cut, Dream On), Ken Lawson (In the Cut, In the House), Yvette Wilson (Moesha, Friday), and Mari Morrow (Uninvited Guest). The series will be released to Netflix at the start of October.
Half & Half follows two half-sisters who have grown up separately for the entirety of their adult lives until they unknowingly become neighbors in a San Francisco apartment building. The show stars Rachel True (The Craft, Half Baked), Chico Benymon (The Haunted Hathaways, When It Comes Around), Essence Atkins (Marlon, A Haunted House), Valarie Pettiford (Jumping the Broom, Stomp the Yard), Telma Hopkins (Family Matters, Gimme a Break), and Alec Mapa (Connie and Carla, Some of my Best Friends). The show will be released to Netflix on October 15.
One on One, initially aired in 2001, focuses on a single dad attempting to raise his teenage daughter alone when his ex-wife moves out of the country. It starred Kyla Pratt (Dr. Dolittle), Robert Ri’chard (Coach Carter, Chocolate City), Kelly Perine (Knight Squad, Dog Gone), Sicily Sewell (Fighting the Odds: The Marylin Gambrell Story), and Jonathan Chase (How to Train Your Husband, Chemistry).
The releases were announced via Twitter with a video featuring the leads of each series. They state, “These shows changed the face of television as we know it and it helps for Black creators, both in front and behind the camera. It has allowed us to be in the homes of people worldwide. It’s going to give an opportunity for a whole new generation that’s going to be watching on Netflix. So thanks to everyone who ever made a social media post or left a message asking about these shows. It didn’t go unnoticed,” via Variety.
Several celebrities took to social media to express their excitement about these new upcoming releases, including R&B singers Chloe X Halle and Gabrielle Union (Bring it On). The streamer has also clarified that while they don’t own the rights to these shows, they will be on the platform for a long while.
