Netflix Renews ‘The Umbrella Academy’ For Fourth And Final Season

Netflix’s critically-acclaimed superhero series, The Umbrella Academy, has been renewed for fourth season. Variety reports this season will be the series last. Based on the graphic novels created by Gerard Way (Hesitant Alien, The Black Parade) and Gabriel Bá (Daytrippers, Two Brothers), the TV adaptation first debuted on the platform back in 2019.

According to Variety, the series follows a group of dysfunctional adopted siblings whose superpowers thrust them on a mission to prevent the end of the world. All of the main cast plans to return including Ritu Arya (Red Notice, Feel Good), David Castañeda (We Die Young, Jane the Virgin), Colm Feore (Storm of the Century, The Prodigy), Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, & Dawn, Modern Family), Tom Hopper (Black Sails, Merlin), Justin H. Min (After Yang, Beef), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Central Park, Blacklight), and Elliot Page (Juno, Hard Candy), and Robert Sheehan (Misfits, Mortal Engines). No word on which additional cast members may join the fourth season.

Showrunner Steve Blackman (Fargo, Outsiders) spoke about his excitement regarding the final season.

“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago,” Blackman told Variety. “But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”

Per Variety, Blackman shares showrunner duties with Jesse McKeown (Fakers, The Big Charade) with both serving as executive producers under his Irish Cowboy banner. They’re accompanied by executive producers Keith Goldberg (Polar, The Number 23), Scott Stuber (Ted, Central Intelligence), Mike Richardson (Hellboy, The Mask), and Beau Bauman (Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television, Prey). The show is produced by UCP. Way and Bá are attached as co-executive producers.

As this project comes to a close, Blackman’s relationship with Netflix will continue. According to Variety, Blackman has extended his overall deal with the platform to develop two new series. One is an original entitled Orbital with story from writers David and Keith Lynch (Zero, Mother). The show is described as “a thriller event series set on the International Space Station.” The second is an adaptation of the popular single-player adventure game, Horizon Zero Dawnfrom game studio Guerrilla (Killzone, Killzone: Liberation) and PlayStation Productions. Blackman will partner with co-showrunner Michelle Lovretta (Killjoys, Mutant X) and Sony Pictures Television.

All three seasons of The Umbrella Academy can be streamed on Netflix.
