Netflix has renewed its award-winning original Dear White People, for the series’ fourth and final season. The series is based on the show’s creator, Justin Simien’s feature film with the same title. While a premiere date has not been announced, the show’s final season will be running for 10 episodes.
“I’m so grateful my little indie-that-could has made it to four seasons at Netflix,” said Simien. “This show, along with the many talented storytellers it has brought into my orbit, has changed my life, and I can’t wait to create a celebratory final volume befitting such a transformative experience.”
The announcement of the renewal came through a video posted online by cast member Marque Richardson (plays Reggie Green), Facetiming all of his cast members on Wednesday.
“I brought you all here to tell you that Dear White People will be back for a fourth and final season!” Richardson shared the news with his excited cast.
The show follows the lives of a group of students of colour attending a predominantly white and fictionalized Winchester University. The show navigates the daily sights and politics of their lives at the not so ‘post-racial’ Ivy League college, according to the show’s offical synopsis. The scripted series tackles issues that arise due to racial tensions, gender, sexuality and class in the modern era.
Simien has said in the past that he based aspects of the show on his own experience as a student at Chapman University.
The news comes two months after the hit series launched its third season on Netflix, in August. Creator Simien will be writing, showrunning and executive producing with fellow showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser, who will be returning for the show’s final season.
Series regulars Logan Browning, Ashley Blaine Featherson, Brandon P. Bell, Antoinette Robertson, DeRon Horton, John Patrick Amedori and Richardson will all return for the final season. Lionsgate TV will be producing the show.
Dear White People is joining other Netflix shows like GLOW and 13 Reasons Why, which are both also ending after four seasons.
