Netflix has announced that its original series Love will be enjoying one last final run on the streaming site. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news this week that Netflix renewed the romantic comedy for a third season, which will also be its last.
The show’s official Twitter account unveiled the third season’s premiere date for March 9. The decision to wrap up the series comes despite the fact that Love is reportedly one of Netflix’s top 20 performers in terms of viewership and binge-watching on the site, ahead of series like GLOW and even Aziz Ansari’s Master of None.
The series’ end is part of a larger trend where Netflix has cancelled strong series such as Sense8 and The Get Down in order to lean down its roster of originals. This will allow the company to pour more resources into its top-tier series such as Stranger Things and its group of Marvel series like The Punisher and Jessica Jones.
Love’s co-creator Judd Apatow said a third and final season is an appropriate end to the series. “I am really excited about the third season of Love,” said Apatow. “I think it is our sweetest, funniest season and ends our story in a beautiful way.”
Netflix’s VP of original series, Cindy Holland, had her own statement to share over Love’s conclusion. “We couldn’t have hoped for better companions to go on this journey of Love with than the incomparable Judd Apatow, Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust, Lesley Arfin and the rest of the fantastic cast and crew who have brought this special series to life,” Holland said. “Over three seasons, viewers around the world have laughed, cringed and cried with Mickey and Gus, and we are excited to share this concluding journey with their fans.”
Both of Love’s first two seasons are currently streaming. The final season will premiere on Netflix this coming March.
