The latest Lady Whistledown Society Paper has confirmed that Bridgerton will be returning to Netflix for seasons three and four. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is set to follow the storylines of Julia Quinn’s (author, The Duke & I) book series, with each season focusing primarily on one of the eight Bridgerton children.
Bridgerton is set in regency-era London and follows the lives of the titular Bridgerton family as they navigate the courtships, heartbreaks, and scandals of the season. The first season of Bridgerton is centered around the main plot line from the first Bridgerton novel, The Duke & I, while the second season, which is currently in production, will follow The Viscount Who Loved Me. Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch), will be the focus of the second season, as the former rake sets out to find wife, via The Hollywood Reporter.
Netflix’s Vice President of Global Television, Bela Bajaria, released a statement from the company to discuss their excitement for the two season renewal. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Bajaria stated “Bridgerton swept us off our feet. The creative team, led by Shonda, knew the material and delivered beautiful, emotional, romantic drama for our members. They have some exciting plans for the future, and we think audiences will continue to swoon for this show. We’re planning to be in the Bridgerton business for a long time to come.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
Bridgerton is the first series to come out of Shonda Rhimes’ (executive producer, How to Get Away With Murder) overall deal with the streaming giant. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes serves as an executive producer on Bridgerton alongside Betsy Beers (producer, Grey’s Anatomy), and showrunner Chris Van Dusen (producer, Scandal). Rhimes released similar statement of enthusiams for the series renewal, stating “This two-season pickup is a strong vote of confidence in our work and I feel incredibly grateful to have partners as collaborative and creative as Netflix. Betsy and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue bringing the world of Bridgerton to a worldwide audience.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
Although fans of the series are surely excited to see where the story of the Bridgerton family goes next, it was recently announced that Regé-Jean Page (For the People) who plays Simon Basset, The Duke of Hastings, would not be returning for the second season of the series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Page’s departure from the series was a planned one, as his initial contract was a one-year deal which has since expired.
