Netflix has released the official trailer for the new social thriller series What/If, according to Comingsoon. The Academy Award-winning actress Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones’ Baby, Cold Mountain) will play the powerful woman Anne in the lead role. The series, created by Mike Kelley (ABC’s drama Revenge, CBS drama Swingtown), will follow respectable people that are willing to commit “deplorable acts” in order to fulfill their desires.
The first season will center on the mysterious Anne (Zellweger), who makes lucrative proposal to a couple of San Francisco newlyweds. During the party, Anne recounts about making an offer “too extraordinary to refuse,” and after climbing a staircase, she drops a chess piece, right before victoriously announcing: “welcome to the game,” TV Line reports.
The cast will also include Jane Levy (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) who will play Lisa, Blake Jenner (Glee, American Animals) who will play Sean, Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World) who will play Cassidy, Samantha Ware (Barry, Chicago Med) who will play Angela, Juan Castano (The OA, Bull) who will play Marcos, Keith Powers (Straight Outta Compton, Before I Fall) who will play Todd, Saamer Usmani (Reign, The Killjoys) who will play Avery, Dave Annable (Brothers and Sisters) who will play Dr. Ian Harris, Louis Herthum (Westworld) who will play Foster, and Tyler Ross, Nana Ghana, Derek Smith, Marissa Cuevas, and Monique Kim.
The show will be executive produced by Kelley, Melissa Loy (Revenge), Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke (Flight), Gartner and Charles Roven (Season of the Witch).
Netflix and Kelley plan multi-season series in an anthology format, in which each season will explore a new morality story “inspired by culturally consequential source material,” according to Variety, and will show how a decision can change people’s lives so dramatically. Each season will have 10 episodes of 60 minutes each.
The series will be available on Netflix on May 24.
