Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming limited series The Altruists, starring Julia Garner (Ozark, The Americans, Weapons) and Anthony Boyle (Masters of the Air, Manhunt, House of Guinness). According to ScreenRant, the eight-episode series will premiere on Netflix on November 19.
The Altruists tells the true story of Caroline Ellison, played by Garner, and Sam Bankman-Fried, played by Boyle. Ellison served as co-CEO of cryptocurrency trading firm Alameda Research, which was founded by Bankman-Fried, who also founded cryptocurrency exchange FTX.
The series follows the pair as they attempt to transform the financial system before their cryptocurrency businesses collapse. ScreenRant describes the pair as a Generation Z version of Bonnie and Clyde, with the series exploring the events that ultimately resulted in billions of dollars being stolen from customers and prison sentences.
The trailer begins with Caroline and Sam meeting for the first time as Sam challenges her with a game centered around analyzing risk. Caroline decides to go “all in,” a decision that foreshadows the increasingly risky choices made as their cryptocurrency business grows.
As the company begins making $1 million per day, warning signs emerge. The trailer shows Caroline becoming concerned about what The Wall Street Journal could uncover while tensions between her and Sam grow as their operation begins to unravel.
The series also stars Alex Lawther (Andor, Black Mirror, The Imitation Game), Matt Rife (Rolling Loud, Wild ‘N Out, Mo), Madison Hu (The Brothers Sun, Bizaardvark, Voyagers), Karan Soni (Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Safety Not Guaranteed), Eugene Young (Veep, Squid Games, KPop Demon Hunters), Naomi Okada (Q Train), Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry, Tracker, Nobody Dumps My Daughter), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, A Real Pain), Terry Chen (Almost Famous, House of Cards, Jessica Jones), Elizabeth Adams (Wayward, The Price of Fitting In), Hannah Galway (Billy the Kid, The Institute, Under the Banner of Heaven), William Mapother (Lost, Another Earth, In the Bedroom), Paul Reiser (Mad About You, Aliens, Whiplash), Robin Weigert (Deadwood, Smile, The Good German), Maddie Hasson (Elevation, God Bless America, Twisted) and Marianna Phung (Pillow Talk, Tokens, Burden).
The Altruists was created by Graham Moore (The Imitation Game, The Outfit), who serves as co-showrunner alongside Jacqueline Hoyt (The Leftovers, The Good Wife, The Underground Railroad). Moore and Hoyt also executive produce with Garner, James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, The Circle, Smashed), Vinnie Malhotra (Couples Therapy, Starting 5, Court of Gold), Jessie Dicovitsky (All the Sinners Bleed), Scoop Wasserstein (The Outfit, Hijacked, Effective), Tonia Davis (Underwater, Leave the World Behind, Snatched) and Lauren Morelli (Orange Is the New Black, Hum, Tales of the City).
All eight episodes of The Altruists will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, November 19.
