Based on webcomics by Alice Oseman (Solitaire, Radio Silence), the first season of Heartstopper debuted in April of 2022. The series was renewed for a second season and a third season due to its popularity. As Variety notes, when the first season came out, Heartstopper was on the top ten list on Netflix in over fifty countries. In anticipation of the season two premiere on August 3rd, Netflix has released a trailer.

Created by Oseman and directed by Euros Lyn (Dream Horse, The Library Suicides), Heartstopper is a coming-of-age story that tackles topics like family, sexuality, friendships, and more. The first season revolves around Charlie Spring, played by Joe Locke (Agatha: Coven of Chaos). He struggles with low self-esteem and bullying as he is one of the only openly gay individuals at his high school. Luckily, he finds solace in a new friend and eventual boyfriend Nick Nelson, played by Kit Connor (Rocketman, Ready Player One).

As depicted in the trailer, Nick and Charlie begin to take their relationship to new heights when they embark on a school trip to Paris. However, although the trailer contains many snippets of happy moments during the Paris trip, it also shows Nick struggling in his own way with the coming out process.

Other stars of the show include Yasmin Finney (Doctor Who, Mars) as Elle Argent, Corinna Brown (Daphne, The Show Must Go Online) as Tara Jones, William Gao (Sunrise, Crescendo) as Tao Xu, and first-time actors Kizzy Edgell as Darcy Olsson and Tobie Donovan as Isaac Henderson.

According to Variety, the first season ended up taking home five awards during the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards ceremony in 2022. Due to its popularity and LGBTQ+ representation, the franchise has accumulated many fans.
