Late Saturday night, Netflix released the first teaser for the highly anticipated fourth season of The Witcher. The show, based on a book series and later adapted into a best-selling video game, gained notoriety early on with star Henry Cavill (The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Justice League) as the lead. After three seasons and Cavill’s public exit, the role was given to Liam Hemsworth (Neighbours, Independence Day: Resurgence). The footage reveals Hemsworth in action as Gearlt of Rivia. View the teaser below.
The teaser finds Hemsworth’s Geralt meeting a ghastly wraith in the forest. The two soon descend into battle, with the swordsmen seemingly losing the fight. Suddenly, he’s able to evade the creature’s grasp and has surrounded it in a glowing blue prism. He silences the ghoul with a final blow to the chest, removing what appears to be its heart, crushing the orange orb to dust.
Set for an October premiere, it’s been a long and tedious trek for this saga of The Witcher. The series premiered in 2019 to great fanfare, but by the third season, rumors began to swirl that Cavill had an issue with the writer’s handling of the source material. In 2022, Cavill announced his departure from the show to return to his role as Clark Kent/Superman in DC’s cinematic universe. Ultimately, the role was recast as DC rebooted the film franchise.
The third season, Cavill’s last, premiered in June of 2023. The upcoming fourth season finally began production in March of this year. The show’s fifth and final season is to be filmed immediately after the fourth.
Hemsworth joins a cast that includes Freya Allan as Ciri (Into the Badlands, Gunpowder Milkshake) and Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) as Yennefer. New faces for the fourth season include Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team), Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld, Bookie), James Purefoy (The Following, Rome), and Laurence Fishburne (Hannibal, The Matrix).
As previously reported, the final two seasons will cover the book series’s last three novels: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake. After the events of the third season, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri find themselves separated. The fourth season will focus on their attempts to rejoin each other.
The first three seasons and a prequel spinoff are all available to stream on Netflix.
