New York City is full of flawed heroes. Daredevil faces his own personal demons and struggles with his faith vs his desires. Jessica Jones is a traumatized alcoholic with a callous demeanor. Luke Cage is a former inmate who was wrongfully imprisoned, who also lost the love of his life in a tragedy that would forever haunt him, and Iron fist lost his family in catastrophe; Marvel really likes their heroes broken. At this years San Diego Comic-Con, Netflix and Marvel unveiled the first teaser for The Defenders, a series that brings together all the New York City heroes, and given the haunting tone and ominous sense form the music, there is something big and devastating coming to New York, and the city is going to need these heroes to come as they are to defend it, flaws and all.
The trailer doesn’t show any real action or even any scenes from the upcoming show, but the slow downed rendition of Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” with isolated vocals really establishes the mood. The visuals in the trailer consist of a series of slowly peeling and tearing layers of newspaper, flyers, and pictures, that are riddled with bits and pieces of information. “Nelson and Murdock” can be seen along with Daredevils other moniker “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen”, as well as the phrase “sin will find you”. “Alias Investigation”, the detective agency of Jessica Jones, is flashed followed by a picture of camera lens (Jessica’s essential tool). The words “property of Seagate Prison” are shown, followed by a picture of the isolated prison in the middle of the sea, which is a reference to the prison Luke Cage was wrongfully locked in. The symbol for Iron Fist is shown along with the words “Who is Danny Rand?”, the true identity of Iron fist. Finally the word “Defend”, which is composed of letters from each heroes logo, is seen about to be engulfed by a large dark hand, which implies that the evil force The Defenders will be facing will be The Hand, the evil order of ninjas that Daredevil has been facing since season 1. The trailer closes with the Voice of Stick, Daredevils mentor, delivering another one of his discouraging lines to what is assumed to be The Defenders.
Comic-Con also gave fans even more Marvel content to look forward, which will serve as the set-up for The Defenders. A new trailer for Luke Cage was revealed, showcasing his cool in the face of death. Daredevil was confirmed for a third season, and a teaser trailer for Iron Fist was released. Now, all there is left to do is wait.
Luke Cage will be releasing September 30 on Netflix, and Iron Fist and The Defenders are scheduled for release in 2017.
