Netflix Plans to Prioritize Writing and Filming of ‘Wednesday’ Once SAG-AFTRA Strike Ends

Netflix is focusing its efforts towards working on the second season of The Addams Family spinoff Wednesday. With the tentative deal made with the WGA, the streaming service wants to prioritize getting the scripts written and eventually filming season two once the SAG-AFTRA strike comes to an end. Via Screenrant, “the WGA strike tentative deal means that Wednesday’s scripts could be in development by the end of the year, but Netflix will need to rally the writers’ room.”

The first season of Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega (You), came out in the fall of 2022 and was widely successful as in its first week it became the most watched English-language series ever on Netflix with 341.2 million hours watched. According to Screenrant, “prior to the strike, Wednesday season 2 had released very few story details, indicating the script development has been minimal.” Cast members of the first season include Emma Myers (Girl in the Basement) as Enid Sinclair, Christina Ricci (The Addams Family) as Marilyn Thornhill, Catherine Zeta-Jones (The Terminal) as Morticia Addams, Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as Larissa Weems, and others. Percy Hynes White (The Gifted), who played Xavier in season one of Wednesday, is speculated to be written out of season two due to a sexual assault allegation. Cast or White’s involvement in the second season is yet to be announced.

Wednesday was renewed for a second season on Netflix earlier this year, but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, any work on the show was thwarted. AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA have set date of October 2 to meet for bargaining. Via Screenrant, “once the SAG-AFTRA strike lifts, Netflix will have to grapple with some scheduling conflicts, including Ortega’s need to finish filming Beetlejuice 2, but given Tim Burton’s involvement in both projects, finagling calendars should not be a concern.”
