In June of 2023, Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled, and Paramount+ removed all episodes from its catalog. After four months, creators Kevin and Dan Hageman (trollhunters: Rise of the Titans) posted to X, announcing the series will be moving to Netflix. Via Screenrant, season one of Star Trek: Prodigy, which consists of twenty episodes, will be available to stream on Netflix at some point this year, and the new episodes from season two will join the streaming service in 2024.
Since the announcement of the show’s cancellation in June, its producers worked hard to ensure Star Trek: Prodigy found a new streaming service for fans to watch from. The cancellation from Paramount+ was part of the streaming service’s decision to remove a multitude of originals. The tweet posted to X from The Hageman’s reads, “Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that’s always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together. We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can’t wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world.”
The animated series, with only its debut season released, has a 94% Tomatometer score. The premise of the children’s show is similar to its Star Trek predecessors; a crew of varying backgrounds works and travels together through space. Star Trek: Prodigy follows a teenage crew in the Delta Quadrant who stumbles upon an abandoned Starfleet ship, the U.S.S Protostar. Upon finding the ship, they take command and learn to work as a team as they make their way through space. The cast of the show includes Rylee Alazraqui (Witness Infection) as Rok-Tahk, Brett Gray (On My Block) as Dal, Angus Imrie (Back to the Outback) as Zero, Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) as Gwyndala, and more.
According to Screenrant, 34,000 fans of the show signed an online petition to save Star Trek: Prodigy before today’s announcement of the show’s revival.
