Netflix will be diving into the world of Dark Animated Comedies as its studio will be working on The House in association with animation firm Nexus studios, Deadline has reported. The streaming giant and Nexus will be recruiting and working with other stop frame animated directors as well to make The House a reality, and to guarantee that the unique series reaches its fullest potential. Nexus is no stranger to producing strong animated content. This Way Up, an animated short Nexus produced about two undertakers delivering a body to a graveyard by Alan Smith and Adam Foulkes, was nominated for an Academy Award for best short. Its other animated short, Back To The Moon, was also nominated for an Emmy, proving that The House is in more than capable hands.
According to Deadline, the project will center on a house and the surreal tale of three generations of families who made it their home.Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels, two Belgian creators whose film, This Magnificent Cake! Earned them a selection at Cannes Selection Fortnight!, will be directing one chapter. Niki Lindroth Von Bahr, a Swedish director and animator, and Paloma Baeza, responsible for BAFTA winning short film Poles Apart, will be directing two other chapters respectively. Nexus studios’ cofounder and Producer, Charlotte Bavasso, had nothing but enthusiastic praise for the upcoming animated series.
“The House is a collection of cinematic stories that are intelligent, witty, inquisitive, warm and yet packed with offbeat humor.” Bavasso said. “For this project, Nexus are bringing together for the very first time, three of the most unique and multi-awarded voices in independent stop motion animation today in Niki, Marc & Emma and Paloma. This production is an organic and collaboration between brilliant and likeminded storytellers. We’re thrilled to have found in Netflix such a perfect home for The House,”
Mike Moon, head of adult animation in Netflix, also had kind words for the union between Netflix and Nexus studios. “Nexus Studios has a remarkable history of working with the best animators from all over the world,” Moon said. “We’re thrilled to partner with Nexus and their incredible directors to bring The House to life.”
