Netflix has ordered a brand new original series focusing on infamous Colombian drug trafficker and politician Pablo Escobar, titled Narcos.
The series, which will be helmed by RoboCop director Jose Padilha, will star Brazilian actor Wagner Moura (above) in the lead role. Padilha and Moura (Elysium) previously worked together on Brazilian action and political films Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within.
Padilha said, “Our idea is to tell the true story of how cocaine became such a huge problem in the U.S. and Europe — and how it all started here in Medellin.”
Narcos will be executive produced by Padilha, Eric Newman (Children of Men), the team of Doug Miro and Carlos Bernard (Sorcerer’s Apprentice), and Chris Brancato (Hannibal). The series is being produced by Gaumont International, whose other projects include the second season of Hannibal for NBC, the second season of Hemlock Grove for Netflix and Barbarella for Amazon and Canal Plus. Narcos is scheduled for an initial ten episode run and is expected to debut on Netflix in 2015.
“Jose and Wagner together created one of the most sophisticated and chilling portraits of criminality and official corruption ever in their Elite Squad movies,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “Their version of the Escobar saga will be like nothing ever seen before.”
