Women have been dominating the landscape of entertainment for quite some time and their impact breeds more talented women to come into the spotlight. Mindy Kaling is one of those women. Her name has been attached to well-known TV shows and movies such as The Office, The Mindy Project, Inside Out, A Wrinkle in Time, and the list goes on and on. Her accomplishments have led her to strike deal with Netflix for a new series based on her childhood.
The ten-episode untitled series is created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher. The two are bringing out Mindy’s childhood as a first generation Indian American girl who has had to go through her fair share of struggles. The funny and intelligent actress has taken on different roles behind the scenes as a writer, executive producer, and director. Her versatility has made her such a commodity in Hollywood.
Kaling has a couple of other projects currently in the works. She’ll be back on Hulu with a miniseries remake of Four Weddings and Funeral which she is writing and executive producing. The show is set to premiere later this year.
Kaling had the chance to screen her movie, Late Night, at the Sundance Film Festival this year. The film stars Emma Thompson as the host of a late night talk show who brings in her first and only female writer, Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling). Late Night received numerous positive reactions and was bought out the rights from Amazon for $13 million.
Kaling shares the relatable inspiration behind writing the script. “Obviously I’m making a comedy movie, so things are exaggerated for comic effect, but similar things have happened to me in my career,” says Kaling. “It’s not so much that the people in the film that I portray are bigoted. They’ve just been sheltered by the status quo. And every one of these people in the movie change. They’re not evil. They evolve.”
Late Night will be released this summer.
