Deadline reported that Netflix has announced the order of an animated comedy-fantasy series with Matt Groening, the creator of hit comedy shows such as The Simpsons and Futurama. The series, titled Disenchantment, has been ordered for twenty episodes.
The show has been up in the air for more than year, with Groening starting talks to create the show with Netflix in January of 2016. During that time, the show has collected an impressive cast: Abbi Jacobson (Abbi from Broad City fame), Nat Faxon (The Way Way Back, The Descendants, Friends from College), and Eric Andre (The Eric Andre Show) have all been cast to provide voices for the main characters on the animated series.
Disenchantment will follow the princess Bean (voiced by Jacobson) as she journeys through a broken-down medieval kingdom named Dreamland along with her two companions: an elf named Elfo (Faxon) and a demon named Luci (Andre). John DiMaggio (Futurama, Adventure Time), David Herman (Office Space, MADtv), and Rich Fulcher (The Mighty Boosh), among others, will provide voices for minor characters. Jacobson expressed her excitement over the project on Twitter.
Groening humorously described the show by saying, “Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.”
In a statement for Netflix, the VP for Original Content Cindy Holland said, “Matt Groening’s brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn’t be happier to work with him on Disenchantment. The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it’s a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans.”
Disenchantment’s twenty episodes will be split over the course of two seasons, with each being 10 episodes long. The comedy series is expected to hit Netflix in 2018.
