Netflix has seized the rights to a brand-new series called Calabasas. Initially reported by Deadline and officially verified by Variety, the series’ executive producers are I. Marlene King (Just My Luck), the creator of Pretty Little Liars, Kim Kardashian (Keeping Up With the Kardashians), and Emma Roberts (We’re the Millers).
According to Variety, Calabasas is derived from a book by author Via Bleidner (Calabasas) entitled If You Lived Here, You’d Be Famous by Now, published in 2021. The forthcoming series chronicles the life of an overly protected 16-year-old Catholic schoolgirl who finds herself amid uncharted waters after she transfers to Calabasas High.
Along with serving as an executive producer, King will also be on board as showrunner and is slated to write the series. Kardashian will be an executive producer alongside King and her partner, Lauren Wagner (As We Fall Silent), under King’s banner, Long Lake Media. Other executive producers slated to serve on Calabasas are Matt Matruski (The Bone Yard) from Belletrist Productions, Alexandra Milchan (The Terror) from her banner, Crescentline, Karah Preiss (Tell Me Lies) and Roberts. Variety notes that the series is in the development phase at the network.
This project will bring Roberts and Kardashian back together as they recently starred alongside each other in both parts of FX’s American Horror Story: Delicate.
Known for being a Calabasas resident herself, thanks to her reality TV series The Kardashians by Hulu and the iconic Keeping Up With the Kardashians by E!, the internet mogul has been on fire with Netflix, as Calabasas is not the only series lined up for Kardashian. As previously reported, Netflix obtained the rights to a comedy series last year entitled The Fifth Wheel, which will star Kardashian.
King’s other work includes executive producing and writing two spinoff series of Pretty Little Liars, PLL: The Perfectionists and Ravenswood. Additionally, King is an executive producer on another spinoff for Max entitled PLL: Original Sign, which is set to premiere its second season on the streamer on May 8.
Milchan has produced numerous television and film projects, such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Tár and The Killer. She has also produced two Apple TV+ series, The Crowded Room and Blackbird.
