According to Deadline, Netflix is making waves across the pond. The streamer has surpassed ITV as the UK’s number-one broadcaster for the first time. For 2025, Netflix announced £ 2.06 billion in UK revenue, an 11.3 percent gain from 2024. This was driven by 7% growth in the number of customers, in addition to “higher average monthly revenue” per subscriber.
ITV brought in £ 1.9 billion in 2025. Although Netflix has taken the number one spot, it may not be for long as the production sector, ITVX, is being sold to Sky. ITVX and Sky together post revenues of £ 4.12 billion.
Operating profit for Netflix UK was £ 44.9 million, up from last year’s £ 43.2 million. Profit after taxes also rose by around 11.5 percent. The company’s UK staff grew from 263 to 342.
Netflix’s UK head of documentary series is chairing the upcoming Edinburgh Television Festival. The dethroning of ITV will surely be one of the main talking points as the UK discuss the industry’s future.
The UK was the first stop on Netflix’s European expansion. The branch launched in 2012 and has since grown into a dominant player in the market. Baby Reindeer, The Gentlemen, and Adolescence are a few hits the company can tout.
As a public broadcaster, the BBC operates under a licensing model. In recent years, the company has experienced financial hardship. Legislators have floated the possibility of requiring streamers to foot the BBC’s bill. The Motion Pictures Association, the proxy for Netflix and other US studios, quickly came out in opposition to the idea. Director General Matt Brittin has acknowledged that the plan would be “difficult” to implement.
Reports earlier this year had indicated that Netflix may be gaining on its UK competitors. Ofcom’s Media Nation report indicated that Netflix was becoming the first option for viewers when they were turning on the television. Netflix had made particular strides in the 16-24 age group.
