Deadline reports that Emma Roberts’ (American Horror Story, Scream Queens) Belletrist Productions will produce an adaptation of Victoria “V.E.” Schwab’s (A Darker Shade of Magic, Vicious) First Kill for Netflix. Schawb’s young adult short story will become an eight, one-hour episode series. Roberts will executive produce along with Belletrist co-founder, Kara Preiss. Felicia D. Henderson (Empire, The Punisher) will serve as showrunner.
Created, written, and executive produced by Schwab, First Kill follows teenaged vampire Juliette as she prepares to select her very first victim. According to Deadline, this is a rite of passage as Juliette belongs to a family of vampires. She eyes the new girl, Calliope, as a perfect specimen. But unbeknownst to Juliette, Calliope is reaching a milestone of her own as the descendant of great vampire slayers. The two girls will soon discover neither is easy to kill or hate for long.
First Kill, a New York Times bestseller, was part of a collection of short stories released in September. According to Deadline, it was published as part of Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite by Natalie C. Parker (Seafire, Beware the Wild) and Zoraida Córdova (Incendiary, Bruja Born). As many as 18 companies were vying for the story’s rights.
In addition to this project, Belletrist Productions is adapting Carola Lovering’s (Too Good to be True) Tell Me Lies to series at Hulu, via Deadline. Roberts recently starred in the Netflix film, Holidate, directed by John Whitesell (Big Momma’s House 2, Thunderstruck). And she is set to appear in Robots, a comedy film starring Jack Whitehall (Bad Education, Fresh Meat) and directed by Anthony Hines (Bruno, The Dictator).
Henderson’s previous works include Showtime’s Soul Food and The Punisher, where she served as a co-executive producer, via Deadline. She co-created BET’s HBCU drama The Quad and was a consulting producer for Fox’s family musical drama, Empire. She currently is a consulting producer for Fox’s fall AI thriller series, neXt.
