Netflix has recently revealed new works as a part of its Australia originals lineup. According to Deadline, The remaining productions unveiled as part of this new lineup include two series. The first one is known by its working title, Desert King, described as an “Outback Western,” and boasts of its co-production undertaken in collaboration with Easy Tiger and Ronde. The second series is The Survivors, a mystery thriller produced in partnership with Tony Ayers Productions.
Desert King, developed by Tim Lee(Bondi Rescue) and Ben Davies (show Me Around The World), is a compelling successor tale, intertwining the lives of billionaire miners, traditional landowners, cowboys and desert criminals as they all vie for a cattle station the size of Wales. Greg McLean(wolf creek) directs the series, produced by Paul Ranford (FireBite), with Ben Davies(Show Me Around The World), Ian Collie(One Night), and Rob Gibson (This Fool) serving as executive producers.
The Survivors is an adaptation of Jane Harper’s (The Dry) eponymous novel and is set in a Tasmanian coastal town as it struggles to cope with its unresolved guilt and grief following three young deaths during a severe storm. Tony Ayres Productions, part of Universal International Studios, has been involved in producing this mystery thriller series. The recent releases join previously announced series, including Boy Swallows Universe, an adaptation of Trent Dalton’s novel helmed by stars like Travis Fimmel (Vikings), Simon Baker (The Mentalist) and Phoebe Tonkin (The vampire Diaries), animated kids series Eddie’s Lil Homies, and second seasons of Heartbreak High and Surviving Summer.
According to Deadline, Que Minh Luu, Netflix’s Content Director for Australia and New Zealand, announced the new movies and series while expressing hope for their success, considering their history of performing well both locally and globally. Run Rabbit Run, True Spirit, The Stranger, and A Perfect Pairing are among the successful films, with Wellmania, Heartbreak High, and Surviving Summer achieving millions of views.
