The fifth season of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things is set to stream in 2025. However, the streamer is continuously releasing more news, as they are changing the series’ ratings to TV-MA, Comicbook.com reports. This means that the content from this upcoming season will be more violent, and early teens cannot watch it without the supervision of an adult.
According to Comicbook.com, the news was released from a fan account that made an X (formerly Twitter) post, @Updates_SThings, on Nov. 26. The X post received a large engagement from users, totaling 6,000 likes and 4.2 million views. Until today, the show’s original rating has always been switched from TV-14 to TV-MA from time to time. According to Comicbook.com, the previous season introduced an even darker tone and storyline to the series with the introduction of the new villain, Vecna. Because of this, the upcoming last and fifth season seems to take things even further. In an interview from 2022 with Deadline, the Duffer Brothers (Wayward Pines, Feat Street Part Two: 1978) shared their hopes for the fifth season, stating that they will try to “stick the landing.”
According to Comicbook.com, a Netflix support agent spoke on What’s on Netflix and stated that the streaming service usually applies a global rating to a show. Still, some individual episodes can be rated differently. “In the case of Stranger Things, the show might be listed as TV-MA to reflect some of the more mature themes across all episodes (like violence, language, and intense scenes). However, the individual episodes could be rated TV-14 based on the content of those specific episodes,” they explained. After the news, fans were able to confirm the shift in rating on their own, with an example being the Twitter (formerly X) post embedded below.
