According to Comicbook, Netflix is extending its hit Monster anthology with a fourth season centered on the infamous Lizzie Borden case. First reported by Variety, the streamer is in the early production stages of this new installment as it prepares for a third.
The announcement marks a long-term investment in the series that redefined Netflix’s true-crime landscape. The success began with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and continued with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
According to Comicbook, the upcoming fourth season will revisit the chilling events of August 4, 1892, when Andrew and Abby Borden were murdered in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie Borden, Andrew’s daughter, soon emerged as the primary suspect. Despite her arrest and subsequent trial, Lizzie was acquitted, and the case remains unsolved. Investigators allegedly mishandled the crime scene and key evidence, a flaw that shaped the trial’s outcome. Also, the prosecutor’s case lacked any physical evidence, including a murder weapon and blood at the crime scene.
As Netflix eyes the Borden case, Comicbook relays that the franchise’s third installment, Monster: The Original Monster, is nearing release. It will depict the life and crimes of Ed Gein, a serial killer whose grotesque acts inspired horror legends.
According to Comicbook, Gein, whose crimes were uncovered in 1957, created household items from human remains stolen from graves. Authorities found evidence linking him to at least two murders in Plainfield, Wisconsin. His case directly inspired characters like Norman Bates in Psycho and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre killer, Leatherface.
The upcoming season stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim) as Ed Gein, with Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird, The Conners) portraying his mother Augusta, Comicbook reports. Tom Hollander (The Night Manager, Bohemian Rhapsody) will appear as Alfred Hitchcock.
As viewers prepare for Ryan Murphy’s (American Horror Story, American Crime Story) interpretation of the Borden story, the first two seasons of Monster are available to stream on Netflix.
