Netflix Ends ‘Girls5Eva’ Journey After Season Three

The Hit Girl Comedy Girls5Eva Never Really had a place to call home. They Started off on Peacock for two seasons then moved to Netflix for its third season. After such a short few seasons according to The Hollywood reporter they have been canceled.

Girls5Eva will not return for a fourth season, as Netflix has canceled the comedy following its third season, which was its first on the platform. The show, which initially aired for two seasons on Peacock, was about a girl group reuniting more than 20 years after their only hit song.

The cancellation ends the show’s run after it was given a second chance on Netflix. Seasons one and two are available on both Peacock and Netflix, while season three was exclusive to Netflix. Created by Meredith Scardino and executive produced by Tina Fey, the series starred Sara Bareilles (Little Voice, The Good Wife), Renee Elise Goldsberry (The Good Fight, Hamilton), Busy Philipps (Dawson’s Creek, Cougar Town), and Paula Pell (Saturday Night Live, Parks and Recreation).

In a recent episode of her podcast Philipps Is Doing Her Best, Philipps commented on the show’s fate, saying, “The show is dead. I’m just saying it because, f*** it. If Netflix won’t, I will. I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts.” Philipps told The Hollywood Reporter

Season three premiered on Netflix on March 14 but failed to crack the platform’s public top 10 lists, both globally and in the U.S. This suggests that the show didn’t attract a large audience. Shows that typically reach the top 10 list usually stay around a little longer.

Despite this, Girls5Eva remained a critical favorite, earning three Emmy nominations, including two writing nods for creator Meredith Scardino(Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and one for outstanding original music and lyrics for the season three song “The Medium Time,” written by Sara Bareilles (Little Voice, The Good Wife).

The series was produced by Universal Television, with Scardino and Tina Fey (30 Rock, Mean Girls) serving as executive producers. Other executive producers included Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, 30 Rock), Robert Carlock (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, 30 Rock), David Miner (Parks and Recreation, The Mindy Project), and Eric Gurian (The Mindy Project, Parks and Recreation).

Girls5Eva’s cancellation marks the end of a show that, while beloved by critics, couldn’t find a broad enough audience to secure a long-term future on Netflix. The series will be remembered for its sharp humor, memorable music, and standout performances by its cast.
