On Thursday, Netflix released the trailer for Castlevania’s ten-part final season, coming to the streaming service on May 13. The trailer sees series protagonist Trevor Belmont and his allies struggle against the litany of foes that have risen to prominence since he defeated Dracula in Castlevania’s second season. However, season four’s trailer teases that Dracula Vlad Tepes may not stay dead for long, as Castlevania’s heroes take-on apocalyptic stakes.
Earlier this month, Netflix announced that its groundbreaking foray into adult anime would be coming to an end with the upcoming fourth season. Deadline identified the Konami video game adaptation as “a key series in the evolution of Netflix’s original programming.” Castlevania features the voice talent of Richard Armitage (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Robin Hood), Theo James (Divergent, Golden Boy), James Callis (Battlestar Galactica, Austenland), Alejandra Reynoso (Winx Club), Adetokumboh M’Cormack (Blood of Zeus), Jaime Murray (Warehouse 13, Dexter) and Graham McTavish (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Preacher) engaging in high stakes war over the future of Wallachia.
Collider provided the official synopsis for Castlevania’s final season: “Wallachia collapses into chaos as factions clash: some attempting to take control, others attempting to bring Dracula back from the dead. Nobody is who they seem, and nobody can be trusted. These are the end times.”
Aside from preventing the resurrection of Dracula, Trevor and his allies Alucard and Sypha must “reckon with the power plays made by Dracula’s former lieutenants in the background of last season,” in Castlevania’s final season, via Gizmodo. With the odds seemingly stacked against them, Collider wonders whether Castlevania’s finale “might not exactly be a happy ending for Trevor Belmont.”
Castlevania fans will have to tune in to Netflix on May 13 to see how things shake-up for the series’ monsters and monster-hunters, but it may not be the last they see of the show’s universe. Netflix has gone on record that they are exploring Castlevania spin-offs, pulling from the vast lore of the video game franchise on which the series is based. Meaning, while season four may mark the end of Trevor Belmont’s journey, there may still be hope of more Castlevania from Netflix in the future.
