Per Deadline, Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for the streamer’s upcoming Italian period drama, The Leopard. The six-part series will be based on the novel of the same name, posthumously published in 1958 by author and aristocrat Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. The novel, which was adapted into an acclaimed feature film by director Luchino Visconti (Les Damnés) in 1963, centers around the Prince of Salina’s realization that his family is in danger, as Italy moves toward unification and the old aristocracy is threatened.
“You are all safe here,” the Prince of Salina Don Fabrizio Corbera, portrayed Kim Rossi Stuart (Everybody Loves Diamonds, Uno bianca), tells his family and friends during the teaser trailer. However, his face betrays his fear that’s not true. The teaser offers a glimpse of the series to come, which will starkly contrast the order and formality of Italian high society with the chaos and violence happening on the streets across 1860s Sicily.
The teaser also features performers Benedetta Porcaroli (Baby, Thou Shalt Not Kill), Deva Cassel (The Beautiful Summer), and Saul Nanni (Supersex, Made in Italy), alongside Paolo Calabresi (Sono Lillo, Boris), Francesco Colella (Miss Fallaci, Christian), Astrid Meloni (The Swarm, I Hate Christmas) and Greta Esposito (Shake, The Sea Beyond).
Tom Shankland (Rogue Heroes, The Serpent) will direct episodes 1-3 and 6, Giuseppe Capotondi (Blocco 181, Berlin Station) will direct episode 4 and Laura Luchetti (Nudes) episode 5. Richard Warlow (Ripper Street, Waking the Dead) and Benji Walters (Obsession, Noughts + Crosses) are the writers. Fabrizio Donvito (Un paradiso per due), Daniel Campos Pavoncelli (Beautiful Rebel), Marco Cohen (Unwanted, Vostro onore), Benedetto Habib (Curon, Pezzi unici) and Alessandro Mascheroni (Couch Potatoes) are the producers for Indiana Production and Will Gould (Bodies, Intergalactic) and Frith Tiplady (The Famous Five, The Gentleman) for Moonage Pictures. The director of photography is Nicolaj Bruel (Legend of Cambria).
The Leopard, which was shot on-location between Palermo, Siracusa, Catania and Rome, will launch on Netflix sometime in 2025.
