Netflix has released a first look at Season Two of their live-action adaptation of One Piece, as reported by Screen Rant Tuesday morning. The teaser, which is available for viewing on Youtube, comes ahead of the company’s annual Tudum Festival, which celebrates Netflix-exclusive movies and television productions.
Season Two of One Piece, which adapts author Eichirou Oda’s (Wanted!, Monsters) ongoing manga and anime series, will cover the story from the beginning of the “Loguetown” arc to the end of the “Drum Island” arc, according to Screen Rant. Inaki Godoy (The Imperfects, MexZombies) will return to lead the ensemble crew of Straw Hat Pirates as captain Monkey D. Luffy; and if the announcement trailer is anything to go by, he’ll be making new acquaintances as well.
After reintroducing the audience to the Straw Hat Pirates, the trailer concludes with a set of animal tracks clicking their way across the screen. Although likely to confuse those unfamiliar with the source material, longtime fans might recognize the footprints as belonging to Tony Tony Chopper, an anthropomorphic reindeer that has since become one of the series’ most iconic characters.
Since Netflix first announced their live-action re-imagining of One Piece in early 2020, fans have wondered how the streaming behemoth would approach Chopper, who joins the Straw Hats during the Drum Island arc in the manga. While all signs point towards Netflix using computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring the character to life, the company has yet to release a complete look at the reindeer’s design — though their decision to advertise him ahead of the series’ release signals confidence that their version of Chopper will meet fan expectations.
The release date for Season Two of One Piece will be revealed this Saturday on May 31st during the company’s Tudum Festival, while Season One is available to stream now on Netflix.
