They’re back! The women of Litchfield Penitentiary have officially returned as of today, with a new trailer released from Netflix for Orange is the New Black‘s seventh and last season. Premiering on July 26th, the upcoming season seems to have scenes featuring old and new characters such as Sophia, Healy, Big Boo, Sister Ingalls and Poussey.
Created by Jenji Kohan, the series is based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (2010), about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison. Produced by Tilted Productions in association with Lionsgate Television, Orange Is the New Black premiered on the streaming giant back in the summer of 2013, and has since been awarded Emmy’s and Golden Globes for cast and crew.
Actress Taylor Schilling plays Chapman in the starring role —a woman in her early thirties who lived in New York City before being sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary, after being convicted of transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her drug smuggling girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon). After disrupting her quiet life with family and friends, once Chapman goes to prison she learns the struggles of myriad of other female inmates and the prison system’s ongoing problems, both public and private.
The series’ upcoming final 13 episodes will follow Piper’s adjustment to life on the outside, while things inside Litchfield Max are “as corrupt and unjust as ever,” says the official logline. “Taystee’s friendship with Cindy still hangs in the balance as her life sentence looms, Gloria and her kitchen staff are confronted by the hard truth of PolyCon’s newest profit stream,” and “others chase drugs or dreams” while they “grapple with the reality of their place in this world.”
Despite Lionsgate TV discussing the series’ possible sequel, as of now, the future of OITNB remains uncertain going forward with Schilling commenting: “My heart is full and achey and so overflowing with gratitude I’m a little dizzy. These extraordinary people have forever changed me. Privilege of a lifetime. #OrangeFamilyForever”
