Kerry Washington stars in upcoming Netflix drama film, American Son – based on the 2018 Broadway play of the same name by Christopher Demos-Brown. The story, according to Netflix’s press release, “presents four distinct viewpoints, while also navigating the unique dynamic of an interracial couple trying to raise a mixed-race son.”
Washington, Steven Pasquale, Jeremy Jordan, and Eugene Lee all reprise their roles from the Broadway set. The story takes places in South Florida where Washington and Pasquale’s characters, an estranged couple, want answers to their 18-year-old teenage son’s disappearance. In the trailer, a white police officer assures Kendra that he is taking the case seriously by mentioning he has kids of his own. Kendra delivers a powerful line in response that serves as a basis for the case: “Any of them black?”
The movie was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. American Son is directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun). Washington and Pilar Savone sat in as executive producers through their Simpson Street banner. Joining them as EPs are Jeffrey Richards and Rebecca Gold.
The trailer was shown during the Emmys. You can watch it below.
Washington emphasizes how different her character Kendra is from Scandal‘s Olivia Pope, a role that Washington played for seven seasons. “This character is like the un-Olivia Pope,” said Washington. “She’s about as different from Olivia Pope as you can possibly get, and I think that’s probably why I was drawn to her. She was such a huge challenge for me as an actress to spend seven or eight years playing somebody and then try to have the pendulum swing in the total opposite direction. She is not — there is no Prada in this one folks, sorry.”
American Son is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on November 1.
