The story came to a close with a fairytale wedding between Meg Stalter’s (Hacks, Cora Bora) character, Jessica, and Will Sharpe’s (The White Lotus, A Real Pain) character Felix in the first season. Too Much will not be returning for season two on Netflix, according to Deadline.
“Our intention was always to make Too Much as a limited series,” Lena Dunham (Girls, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) said via Deadline. “It was meant to feel like a classic transatlantic love story but with time to really dig into the complexities that a film doesn’t have the space for.”
Too Much follows Jessica, a mid-thirties New York workaholic. After a relationship she believed was permanent was abruptly ended, she moved to London, intending to embrace a reclusive, Brontë-esque lifestyle. Her path to solitude is complicated by Felix, an indie musician who presents a multitude of warning signs. Though their bond causes more issues than it resolves, their magnetic, unusual connection is something Jessica cannot ignore via Deadline.
After reconciliation, the couple finally ties the knot in the season one finale.
“Of course I fell fully in love with Meg and Will’s dynamic and started imagining what the rest of their characters’ lives together could look like–Felix and Jess have a baby! Felix and Jess are on the first ship to populate Mars!” Dunham said on the panel, according to Deadline. “But as Luis and I sat with what are made, we realized we had told the story. It ends with a wedding. There’s even a little Easter egg, which is that within the final scene you can hear me yell ‘cut!’ We had done what we needed to do, and part of the job is knowing when to park it.”
Deadline said Dunham pondered the infinite possibilities that there may be a second chance at a second season.
“Who knows–maybe there will be a time down the line when it feels right to check in on them again,” she said.. “But right now I’m pulling a Mary Poppins and heading on to the next (imaginary) family that needs me.”`
