Netflix has decided not to order a third season of the fantasy drama Warrior Nun. According to Deadline, the decision comes a month after the release of the show’s second season.
According to Deadline, the show’s second season rating performance has followed a pattern of other scripted series that have been canceled by Netflix as the streaming service evaluates viewing vs. cost for their season renewal decisions. The second season of Warrior Nun spent around three weeks in Netflix’s Weekly Top Ten for English-language series, peaking at number five. The show has built a small yet passionate fan base, which helped to secure a second-season renewal but unfortunately wasn’t enough to keep the series alive in the long run.
The series inspired by manga novels by the same name, Warrior Nun is from creator and executive producer Simon Barry (Ghost Wars, Bad Blood), who is also a showrunner. The other executive producers are Stephen Hegyes (Stormworld, The Guard) and David Hayter (A Christmas Horror Story, Lost in Oz). Amy Berg (The Alienist, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) works as the consulting producer and Terri Hughes Burton (The 100, Eureka) works as the c0-executive producer.
The cast of the show is formed by Alba Bautista (Nothing Ever Happened, Jogo Duplo), who plays Ava, the warrior nun; Kristina Tonteri-Young (Dancing Through the Shadow, Outside the Wire) stars as Sister Beatrice; Lorena Andrea (Infamous Six, No Man’s Land) plays Sister Lilith; Toya Turner (New Amsterdam, Animator) who appeared in season one as Shotgun Mary; Tristán Ulloa (Stoyan, Journey to Somewhere) stars as Father Vincent; Thekla Reuten (Beat, Narcosis) who plays Jillian Salvius; Sylvia De Fanti (Don Matteo, Medici) as Mother Superion; and, William Miller (Don’t Look at the Demon, Cuéntame) stars as Adriel.
Warrior Nun follows 19-year-old Ava, who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. Ava discovers that she is now part of an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find her and make her do their will.
Season one and two of Warrior Nun are available to stream on Netflix.
