Per Deadline, Netflix has decided not to move forward with its LGBTQ+ romcom Uncoupled. The show starred five-time Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris.
The show was created by Darren Star, who is responsible for popular shows Sex and the City and Emily in Paris, and Jeffrey Richman, who was a producer on Modern Family and Frasier. Uncoupled followed Michael Lawson, a New York City real estate broker who, when his longtime boyfriend moves out, must face the prospect of starting over — and dating again — in his 40s, according to Netflix.
The news of its cancellation does not come as a surprise. After the first season’s July release, the show only reached the sixth spot on the Top Ten list once. However, it is important to note that the Netflix Top Ten list is measured by views per hour, which puts thirty minute shows like Uncoupled at a disadvantage.
Rumors about the cancellation spread last year, says Deadline. MTV Entertainment Studios, the producing company behind the series, reportedly began to look toward a Paramount Global service – perhaps Showtime – to continue the show. The effort to find a network that could house the drama was not successful.
The series also featured Emerson Brooks (The Last Ship, MacGyver), Tisha Campbell (Martin, My Wife and Kids), Brooks Ashmanskas (Julie & Julia, The Good Wife), and Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Pollock).
While Uncoupled no longer lives on, Star’s Emily in Paris remains a hit show on Netflix, recently releasing its third season and debuting at number two on Netflix’s Top 10 English-language chart. It has also been renewed for a fourth installment.
