Netflix Cancels ‘The Sandman’ With Second Season

Netflix’s The Sandman is going to sleep permanently. According to Deadline, the second season of the mystical series will be its last. The streamer posted the news on its X account.

According to Deadline, showrunner Allan Heinberg (Young Avengers, Wonder Woman) shared a message on X explaining the original plan was to tell the protagonist Dream’s narrative arc.

“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” Heinberg stated online via Deadline. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

Based on the graphic comic by Neil Gaiman, the series explored ancient mythos centering on the manifestation of dreams, Morpheus, and his imprisonment for more than a century. Once released, Morpheus seeks to balance the scales of his fantastical world and bring order to his realm called the Dreaming.

The series starred Tom Sturridge (Widow Clicquot, Like Minds), Boyd Holbrook (A Complete Unknown, Logan), Patton Oswalt (King of Queens AP Bio), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Why Women Kill, Sugar), Jenna Coleman (The Jetty, Victoria), Gwendoline Christie (Severance, Game of Thrones), David Thewlis (Naked, The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas) and Vivienne Acheampong (Everything Now, We the Jury). Gamin and Heinberg co-wrote and served as executive producers along with David S. Goyer (Foundation, Blade: Trinity).

This news comes as Gaiman faces a series of sexual assault allegations and misconduct accusations from at least two women. Many projects from Gaiman have been delayed or canceled since the allegations came to light. The third season of Prime Videos’ Good Omens was reduced to 90-minute episode, and there have been no updates on the planned Anansi Boys series that was announced in 2022. Dark Horse Comics also recently canceled new project with the Coraline scribe and dropped him as a client, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
